Qaitbay Castle - View the Qaitbay Citadel from the outside. This citadel is one of Egypt’s most significant defensive strongholds along the Mediterranean coast. Built in the 15th century A.D., it played a crucial role in Alexandria’s defenses. Located at the entrance of the eastern harbor on Pharos Island’s east point, it was constructed on the site of the renowned Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The lighthouse remained operational until the Arab conquest, despite several disasters altering its shape. Restoration efforts began under Ahmed Ibn Tulun around 880 A.D. An earthquake in the 11th century damaged the octagonal section, leaving only the base, which served as a watchtower with a small mosque built on top. A devastating earthquake in the 14th century destroyed the structure.
