Initially known as the “Market Square,” it later became the “Constitution Square,” and since 1879, it has been called “Plaza de Cervantes” in honor of its most famous resident, Miguel de Cervantes. Despite this, it is commonly referred to as the “main square,” as it is the largest and most central square in Alcalá de Henares.
- Colegio de San Ildefonso - The Colegio Mayor de San Ildefonso and the Rectorate of the University of Alcalá were established as the core of the university system designed by Cardinal Cisneros in 1499. Its facade, constructed from 1537 by Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón, an architect of the cathedrals of Salamanca and Segovia, was completed in 1553 by Pedro de la Cotera. The elegant decor was crafted by the most skilled artisans of the time, including Francisco de Villalpando and Ruiz Diaz of the Corral, who created the admirable bars of the Toledo Cathedral. It retains the Patio de Santo Tomas de Villanueva, the Philosopher, and the Trilingual. The Auditorium and the University Chapel are the only two buildings of the College built during the founder’s time. The Escolástico auditorium or theater, located in the western bay of the Trilingual Patio, was used for the conferral of degrees and other solemn academic events.
- Calle Mayor - This street traces its origins to the old Jewish quarter of the city, dating back to the twelfth century, which was built along the path of the Caesar Augusta Roman road that passed through Complutum. As it is today, it was the main commercial street of Alcalá during the Middle Ages, with shops at street level and residences on the upper floors, connected by galleries that allowed residents to move between homes without descending to the street.
- Museo Casa Natal de Cervantes - The birthplace of Miguel de Cervantes has been a topic of debate and speculation, but in 1948, Luis Astrana Marín, author of “The Heroic and Exemplary Life of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra,” identified this building as his birthplace. Located in the historic old city of Alcalá de Henares, next to the ‘Hospital de Antezana’ where Cervantes’ father, Rodrigo de Cervantes, worked, the property was purchased by the Alcalá de Henares City Council in 1954 to establish a Cervantes museum. The current museum, inaugurated in 1956 as the ‘Cervantes Museum and Library,’ is the result of reconstruction work on the original property, which included the creation of a garden and a new entrance at number 48 Calle Mayor, previously located at number 2 Calle Imagen. By Royal Decree 680/1985 of April 19, the Casa Natal de Cervantes was transferred to the Community of Madrid.
- Catedral de Alcalá de Henares - The Cathedral Magistral of Saints Justo and Pastor has been the town’s center since the Middle Ages. With a concentric circle structure, it was the starting point for various streets leading to the gates of the walled enclosure. Besides being a religious center, it also served as the political and social hub of Alcalá, with council houses located in the Plaza de Abajo and Picota. Its origins date back to the martyrdom of Justo and Pastor, who were beheaded and buried at this site in the early fourth century. The current Gothic-style building began construction in 1497, commissioned by Cardinal Cisneros and executed by the Egas brothers, Anton and Enrique, with assistance from Pedro Gumiel. The church regained its status as the Cathedral of the Diocese Complutense in 1991.
