- I Trulli di Alberobello - World Heritage Site - Alberobello, in the region of Puglia in Southern Italy, is a strange and picturesque destination, which is becoming an important fixture on the travel itineraries of tour operators, as well as independent travellers. The small town has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage site for its unusual districts of trulli, the characteristic white-washed conical-roofed houses of the area. Looking like igloos, constructed out of pure stone, the beehive-shape structures, have origins that dates back to the 15th century and maybe older. The trulli, found nowhere else in the world, are built of local limestone, without any form of plastering, and with a cavity on the top and painted with mystical or religious symbols.

Alberobello presents a captivating sight, predominantly due to its trulli, the region’s characteristically dome shaped edifices constructed from local stone. Originating from the Greek term ‘tholos’, meaning ‘dome’, ‘Trulli’ refers to these unique structures. Each ‘trullo’, whitewashed and built without the use of lime or cement, features a conical external roof, a dome-like interior, and a central square compartment that interconnects the kitchen and additional rooms via arches. Craftily conceived to avoid governmental detection and subsequently, tax evasion, the Trulli were made to resemble uninhabited dwellings. This factor influenced their mortar-less design which enabled quick and easy disassembly when necessary. Trulli are scattered across the region’s rural landscape, but their highest concentration can be found in Alberobello (over 1000). This has led to Alberobello gaining recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
