From Coffee to Cascades: A Day in Alajuela’s Natural Wonders
When the waves took a break, I decided to explore the landlocked wonders of Costa Rica. The Poás Volcano and La Paz Gardens tour promised a day of nature and culture, and it delivered in spades. Join me as I recount a day filled with coffee, waterfalls, and unexpected camaraderie.
A Morning of Coffee and Connection
The day began with the familiar scent of coffee wafting through the air as we made our way to the coffee plantations of San Isidro. As a surfer, I’m used to early mornings, but this was a different kind of wake-up call. The rolling hills of Alajuela, dotted with coffee plants, were a sight to behold. Our guide, Daniel, and driver, Olman, were a bit late, but they kept us updated via WhatsApp, a small hiccup that was quickly forgotten as we hit the road.
The coffee plantation was a serene start to the day. While there were no free samples, the café on site offered a rich cup of Costa Rican coffee that was worth every colón. As we sipped our coffee, Daniel shared stories of the region’s coffee history, his enthusiasm infectious. It was a small group, just seven of us, which made for a more intimate experience. We exchanged travel stories and tips, a reminder of the camaraderie that often forms on these adventures.
Nature’s Splendor at La Paz
Next, we headed to the La Paz Waterfall Gardens. While some might compare it to a zoo, I found it to be a sanctuary of sorts. The gardens were alive with the sounds of rescued animals, from the gentle hum of hummingbirds to the playful antics of sloths. It was a reminder of the diverse wildlife that calls Costa Rica home.
The waterfalls themselves were a highlight. The sound of water crashing down was a symphony of nature, and the mist on my face was a refreshing break from the tropical heat. We took our time exploring the trails, each turn offering a new perspective of the cascading water. Lunch was a buffet affair, and I made sure not to miss the Lizano sauce this time around. The flavors were as vibrant as the surroundings, a true taste of Costa Rica.
A Day Well Spent
Though the Poás Volcano portion of the tour was canceled due to safety concerns, the day was far from a disappointment. The tour company was upfront about the change and even refunded us a portion of the cost, a gesture that was much appreciated.
As we made our way back to San Jose, I reflected on the day’s adventures. It was a reminder that sometimes the best experiences come from the unexpected. The camaraderie with fellow travelers, the beauty of the landscapes, and the warmth of our guides made for a memorable day. If you find yourself in San Jose with a day to spare, I highly recommend this tour for a taste of Costa Rica’s natural beauty and cultural richness.
