- Giza Plateau - The Giza pyramid complex, also known as the Giza Necropolis, is located on the Giza Plateau in Greater Cairo, Egypt. It includes the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Pyramid of Khafre, and the Pyramid of Menkaure, along with their associated pyramid complexes and the Great Sphinx of Giza. These structures were constructed during the Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom of Ancient Egypt.
The site is situated at the edge of the Western Desert, approximately 9 km (5 mi) west of the Nile River in Giza, and about 13 km (8 mi) southwest of Cairo’s city center.
The Great Pyramid and the Pyramid of Khafre are the largest pyramids built in ancient Egypt and have historically been recognized as symbols of ancient Egypt in Western culture. They gained popularity during Hellenistic times when the Great Pyramid was listed by Antipater of Sidon as one of the Seven Wonders of the World. It is the oldest of the ancient Wonders and the only one still in existence.
- Khafre’s Pyramid - Khafre’s pyramid complex includes a valley temple, the Sphinx temple, a causeway, a mortuary temple, and the king’s pyramid. The valley temple contained several statues of Khafre, some of which were discovered in a well in the temple floor by Mariette in 1860. Additional statues were found during later excavations by Sieglin (1909–10), Junker, and Reisner.
- Great Pyramid of Cheops (Khufu) - Khufu’s pyramid complex features a valley temple, now buried beneath the village of Nazlet el-Samman. Diabase paving and nummulitic limestone walls have been discovered, but the site remains unexcavated. The valley temple was linked to a causeway, which was largely destroyed during the village’s construction.
- Great Sphinx - The Great Sphinx of Giza, often called the Sphinx of Giza or simply the Sphinx, is a limestone statue of a reclining sphinx, a mythical creature with a lion’s body and a human head. Facing directly from west to east, it stands on the Giza Plateau on the west bank of the Nile in Giza, Egypt. The Sphinx’s face is generally believed to represent Pharaoh Khafre.
Carved from the bedrock, the original shape of the Sphinx has been restored with layers of blocks. It measures 73 m (240 ft) long from paw to tail, 20 m (66 ft) high from the base to the top of the head, and 19 m (62 ft) wide at its rear haunches. It is the oldest known monumental sculpture in Egypt and is widely believed to have been constructed by ancient Egyptians of the Old Kingdom during Pharaoh Khafre’s reign (c. 2558–2532 BC).
- Saqqara (Sakkara) Pyramids - Continue your day tour to Sakkara, located just 27 km southwest of Cairo. Visit the Step Pyramid (built for King Zoser), which is considered a significant part of the pyramid’s evolution from the simple mastaba to its well-known form.
- Menkaure Pyramid - Menkaure’s pyramid complex includes a valley temple, a causeway, a mortuary temple, and the king’s pyramid. The valley temple once housed several statues of Menkaure. During the 5th Dynasty, a smaller ante-temple was added to the valley temple. The mortuary temple also contained several statues of Menkaure.
- Pyramid of Unas - The Pyramid of Unas, belonging to King Unas, is renowned for containing the earliest known religious inscriptions inside a pyramid, known as the Pyramid Texts. These hieroglyphic spells were carved on the walls to aid the king’s safe journey to the afterlife and his union with the gods.
- Tomb of Idut - The Tomb of Idut is a beautifully decorated tomb in the Saqqara Necropolis that belonged to Princess Idut, the daughter of King Unas. The tomb is famous for its colorful relief scenes depicting daily life in ancient Egypt, including farming, fishing, and offering rituals for the afterlife.
- Pyramid of Teti - The Teti Pyramid was constructed for King Teti. Although the pyramid appears small and ruined from the outside today, it was once an important royal monument in the Saqqara Necropolis.
- Memphis and Sakkara - Memphis was the ancient capital of Egypt during the Old Kingdom, founded by King Menes. It was a major political, religious, and commercial center, renowned for the Temple of Ptah and royal tombs. Today, Memphis is a significant archaeological site with ruins and statues, including the massive statue of Ramesses II.
