This includes the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure, the Great Sphinx, several cemeteries, a workers’ village, and an industrial complex. It is the northernmost section of the 16,000-hectare Pyramid Fields on the Western Desert’s edge of the Nile Valley, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Memphis and its Necropolis.
The plateau stands approximately 60 meters above sea level.
- Egyptian Museum - The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities, widely known as the Egyptian Museum (Arabic: المتحف المصري, romanized: al-Matḥaf al-Miṣrī, Egyptian Arabic: el-Matḥaf el-Maṣri [elˈmætħæf elˈmɑsˤɾi]) (also referred to as the Cairo Museum), is situated in Cairo, Egypt, and boasts the world’s largest collection of Egyptian antiquities. It contains over 120,000 items, with a significant portion on display. Located in Tahrir Square in a building constructed in 1901, it is the largest museum in Africa. Among its treasures is Pharaoh Tutankhamun’s collection, including the iconic gold burial mask, considered one of the most famous artworks globally and a significant symbol of ancient Egypt.
- Great Pyramid of Cheops (Khufu) - The Great Pyramid of Giza is the largest of the Egyptian pyramids and served as the tomb for Pharaoh Khufu, who reigned during the Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom. Constructed around 2600 BC over approximately 27 years, the pyramid is the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and the only one that remains largely intact. It is the most renowned monument of the Giza pyramid complex, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Memphis and its Necropolis.” It is located at the northeastern end of the line of the three main pyramids at Giza.
- Great Sphinx of Giza - The Sphinx is the oldest known monumental sculpture in Egypt and one of the world’s most recognizable statues. Archaeological evidence indicates it was created by ancient Egyptians of the Old Kingdom during Khafre’s reign (c. 2558–2532 BC).
The reasons for the Sphinx’s missing nose are unclear, but close examination suggests it was intentionally removed using rods or chisels. Contrary to popular belief, it was not damaged by cannon fire from Napoleon’s troops during his 1798 Egyptian campaign. Its absence is depicted in artwork predating Napoleon and mentioned in descriptions by the 15th-century historian al-Maqrīzī.
- Khan Al-Khalili - Khan el-Khalili (Arabic: خان الخليلي) is a renowned bazaar and souq (or souk) in Cairo, Egypt’s historic center. Established as a trade hub during the Mamluk era and named after one of its historic caravanserais, the bazaar district has become a major attraction for both tourists and Egyptians. It is also home to many Egyptian artisans and workshops producing traditional crafts and souvenirs. The name Khan el-Khalili originally referred to a single building in the area; today, it denotes the entire shopping district.
