It is situated approximately 60 kilometers (37 mi) north of Luxor and remains a Latin Catholic titular see. It houses the Dendera Temple complex, one of the most well-preserved temple sites from ancient Upper Egypt.
- Abydos Boat - The Temple of Seti I, now referred to as the Great Temple of Abydos, was historically known as “Menmaatre Happy in Abydos,” and is a notable historical site in Abydos.[1] Abydos holds great significance due to its association with kingship, being the burial site of the proto-kings from the Pre-Dynastic period, First Dynasty kings, and the location of the Cult of Osiris.[2]
Construction began in the 13th century BC by the 19th Dynasty Pharaoh Seti I, also known as Sethos, but was not completed by the time of his death. Instead, the construction was continued by his son Ramesses II.[3] The temple was built to honor and worship the earlier pharaohs of Egypt as well as the major gods of the Egyptian pantheon.[3][4] Ramesses modified the temple by altering its original design and adding inscriptions within the temple.
