Akumal Monkey Sanctuary was a highlight of our trip - We did a lot of great things near Playa Del Carmen, but the Monkey Sanctuary Tour was probably our favorite. It was a real delight to meet Sara, a black faced capuchin monkey. She climbed on our hands and also over our heads. When Sara climbed over my hands it felt a little bit like holding hands with a monkey. It was also clear that our guide really cared about all the animals and had sweet stories of them being rescued or of them coming to bond with other animals at sanctuary. She gave the tour in both English and Spanish and was friendly and cheerful. After our tour, they had cold drinks for everyone which were welcome and refreshing. The photos were a little pricey but well worth it. We would never have captured such nice photos ourselves. We would recommend it to anyone.

Amazing - Loved this experience! We had the full day, ATVS, Cenote , turtles and monkeys - it was unforgettable. Through our day you could see that the team truly cared about wildlife and the animals in their care. From ensuring we don’t damage a natural cave, making sure we didn’t destroy any habitats when swimming with the turtles, to talking us through each and every animal passionately. Our tour guide, Stephen, was lovely and passionate. Telling us where each animal was rescued from asking if we had questions and kept the tour fun with humour. He was also informative of the quality in which some animals in tourist traps are kept and spoke about this issue with the upmost importance and regret for how some animals away from the sanctuary are kept. The Cenote was absolutely gorgeous and well preserved, the staff make a great team ensuring your safety from the moment you’re with them. The water in the Cenote was clear and protected, just like the rock formations Whilst riding on the ATV they’re attentive to you and your skill level ensuring that your safe- I had a member of staff check in with my initial handling of the atv as I’d never rode one before and it felt good that they were watching us all carefully despite riding themselves. *bring a face covering for the ATV* The turtle swimming was absolutely incredible and I can’t believe I got to experience it The whole experience was insane value for money we booked with our tui rep at our hotel and paid £102 ish each. I don’t think you could do that anywhere else - at least in the uk. We also paid for photos as this was an experience we wanted to hold onto whilst not being strapped to our phones- they were amazing and delivered in less than 24 hours. The quantity of photos you receive for the price you pay is amazing, as a photographer myself I appreciate the quality, quick turn around and quantity- we received 80ish photos - a whole gallery of the day. My only wish with the photos would have been some whilst swimming with the turtles however I understand how difficult and precarious that could be! Our on site lunch was lovely and we got to observe deer alongside the canteen! Again INSANE value for money.

Worth it. Family focused. - Shuttle bus was on time, it was a bit of a trek to the actual location, but that’s just because of where our hotel was situated. Our guide was very knowledgeable, and funny. He struggled with some of the words in English, which made the kids giggle, and I loved that. The interaction with the animals was pretty cool. The monkeys were awesome, the place was clean, there was no push to purchase anything. The photos they took were good. I bought the package of photos for 1000 Mexican pesos.Overall, highly recommended for family. My kids loved it and I would go back.

So much fun!! - We loved walking through the paths and seeing all the different animals, and hearing their rescue stories. The monkeys were adorable. We even heard howler monkeys, which is unusual. Having monkeys on our head’s shoulders, and in hands was the thrill of a lifetime. I highly recommend this experience.

Nice work by all involved - Great experience, great to see the work that is being put in to improve the life of these animals. As a family, we all learnt lots and had fun. My only negative comment would be that you get a pick up offered by the sanctuary outside of the booking of Viator. But the pick up and drop off both leave you with lots of time wasted. On arrival we got told we have to wait in a holding area, for 35 mins and on the way back we again had to wait for a driver to arrive. Not ideal with kids!

Great Experience Overall - The sanctuary was a great experience. Our guide was wonderful. Tip: If you use their transportation, just purchase the lunch package. If not, you’ll be waiting around for another hour and a half for them to take you back to your resort.

Beautiful idea of the sanctuary (in practice) but less in reality because there is no real encounter with monkeys. - The idea of the sanctuary that cares for and protects monkeys is a superb idea. But in practice, we barely interact with captive monkeys. The interaction zone is under strict control of the monkey guide and trainer. While I was expecting an encounter with monkeys, I was allowed to sit with lots of other visitors and wait for the monkey to jump on my head and hands, all because his trainer was giving him monkey snacks. The experience seems to be made in advance and every time the staff takes pictures that will have to be bought too expensive afterwards. The guide was great but as she did the tour “in bilingual” it was really long to wait in every place of the park under the blazing sun.

Ok experience - It was marketed to be a fully immersive experience. We were under the impression that we would be able to interact with the animals there. It totally gave the vibe of visiting a zoo. You can tell that the animals were definitely saved and being treated very well. But for the price point, they are charging us, you would think that they would have animals that us as customers are able to fully pet, hold, and interact with. I could have visited the zoo for a much more affordable price or spent that amount of money on a different experience

Scam - Made a reservation for 10am. Reservation time was changed by business. Told them we could not make the new timeframe that they picked for us. They told us they would initiate a refund. I sent them two messages regarding the refund and did not receive a response back. Ended up having to go through my bank to cancel the charge. Terrible business ethics.
