- Airlie Beach - The day begins at 10 am, a leisurely hour. You’ll meet your guide as Airlie Beach comes alive, and soon, you’re heading west, leaving the coast behind.
The journey to the Pioneer Valley takes about ninety minutes and is worth every moment. Sugar cane fields pass by in the mid-morning light, transitioning to ancient granite mountains as the road descends into the valley. Two distinct landscapes in one morning.
Your guide has an in-depth knowledge of this region — the geology, the birdlife, the Ngaro and Gia people who have called this place home for tens of thousands of years. Small groups only. No large buses, no headsets. Just a few curious travelers and someone who truly loves sharing this place with you.
By the time you arrive at the Pioneer Valley, it’s nearing midday, and you’ve already experienced a memorable morning.
- Pinnacle Family Hotel - Nestled in the Pioneer Valley with views over the cane flats and surrounding hills, the Pinnacle is an authentic Australian country pub that simply exists.
Lunch is included, and you’re having a pie. A genuine one. Fresh from the oven, with pastry that truly flakes, and a filling full of flavor. The Pinnacle makes pies the way they should be made.
Sit down, relax, and take in your surroundings. Your guide joins you for the meal. The stories shared over a pub table are always the best. Take your time — you’re here at the perfect hour for a leisurely lunch.
After lunch, the road begins to climb. The range awaits.
- Eungella National Park - In the early afternoon, the landscape transforms completely. Eungella means “land of clouds,” and as the road winds up into the range — mist low in the valleys, the canopy closing in — you understand how it got its name.
One of Australia’s most significant national parks and one of its least crowded. Over 50,000 hectares of subtropical rainforest, protected by the isolation that made it hard to reach. The biodiversity here is remarkable — 160 species of birds, frogs found nowhere else on earth, and the Eungella honeyeater, a bird so unique to this place it bears the park’s name.
Your guide walks with you slowly, pointing out things you might otherwise miss. By the time they say, “Okay — let’s go find some platypus,” you’re ready.
- Broken River - Broken River is, without exaggeration, the best place in the world to see wild platypus.
The water flows clear and cold over smooth river stones. Paperbarks lean over the bank. The afternoon light hits the water at just the right angle. And then — without warning — a small dark shape surfaces. Bill sweeping side to side. Moving with complete confidence in its own element. Then gone.
That first sighting always takes your breath away.
Platypus have been here for at least 110 million years. Watching one swim, you feel the weight of that history. Your guide reads the river expertly — knowing which pool, which bank, which light. They let the moment unfold, then explain the science afterward.
No one wants to leave. That’s the sign of a great day.
- Airlie Beach - Eventually, you do leave. And the drive back is a fitting conclusion to the day.
Descending from the range, the light has changed. The sun is setting behind the rainforest-capped mountains, turning the canopy golden at the edges. By the time you return to the Pioneer Valley, it’s illuminating the cane fields too — long shadows, warm colors, the entire landscape doing something unique at this hour.
Your guide continues to talk. You continue to listen. Somewhere between the mountains and the coast, the day settles into a quiet, satisfied feeling of having truly explored.
Airlie Beach comes back into view as the last of the light fades. A wonderful place to end the day.
