Construction of the Taj began the next year; while the main structure is believed to have been completed in eight years, the entire complex was not finished until 1653. Shortly after its completion, Shah Jahan was deposed by his son Aurangzeb and confined in Agra Fort, where he spent his remaining days looking at his masterpiece through a window. Upon his death in 1666, Shah Jahan was laid to rest here beside his cherished Mumtaz.
