• Agios Nikolaos - Agios Nikolaos serves as the capital of the Lassithi prefecture, located on the eastern side of Crete, along the shores of Mirabello Bay. A key highlight is the Voulismeni Lake, situated in the town center and encircled by charming cafes and restaurants. This lake, which connects to the sea via a small blue bridge, is notable for its historical and geological importance due to its considerable depth. It holds historical significance as it was a place of isolation for those afflicted with leprosy until 1957. Over the centuries, it was inhabited by Venetians and Turks before becoming a leper colony. Spinalonga has long been a tourist destination, but its popularity surged after 2005 when British author Victoria Hislop published “The Island,” a historical novel about the lives of lepers on Spinalonga. Today, hundreds of visitors come daily to explore and learn about the island’s rich history firsthand.
