- Imbros Gorge - Situated at an altitude of 780 meters, Imbros village is at the southern end of Askifou. Roman architectural structures have been discovered in the village. Its name originates from the small community of Imbrian immigrants who arrived in 1479, the year the island of Imbros fell under Ottoman rule. Imbros Gorge begins just south of the village. During World War II, twelve thousand soldiers evacuated the island by walking through the gorge to Crete’s southern coast under airplane fire, where they were rescued by the Royal Navy and taken to Egypt. Imbros Gorge is an 11 km long canyon near Hora Sfakion in southern Crete and Samariá Gorge. Its narrowest section is 1.60 m wide and it concludes at the village of Kommitádes.
- The Castle of Frangokastello - A brief stop will be made for photos outside the fortress of Frangokastello, where significant historical events occurred during the Venetian and Ottoman periods. The castle was constructed by the Venetians between 1371-74 as a garrison to maintain order in the rebellious Sfakia region, deter pirates, and protect Venetian nobles and their properties. On May 17, 1828, a renowned battle took place at Frangokastello. Hundreds of locals and Epirotes, led by Hatzimichalis Dalianis, a Greek patriot from Epirus, attempted to extend the Greek war of independence from the mainland to Crete by occupying the castle. However, they were besieged by the Turks and slaughtered. According to tradition, around the battle’s anniversary each May, shadows of the armed Cretan and Epirote soldiers who perished there appear to march towards the fortress at dawn. These are known as Drosoulites and have been explained as a meteorological phenomenon.
- Plakias - Plakias coastal village is the perfect spot for a lunch break or a swim. Located in southern Crete, 40 km south of Rethymno, it has 237 permanent residents and is situated at the cove of the bay of the same name on a stunning sandy beach, 1300 m long, between the capes Stavros and Kako Mouri, ideal for swimming and sea sports. While enjoying a romantic barefoot walk on the sandy beach, one can encounter the magnificent sand flowers. The Sea Daffodil is one of the most beautiful wild Cretan flowers, also known as Sand Daffodil, Sea Lily, and Sand Lily, marking a unique Cretan holiday.
- Kourtaliotiko Gorge - Located 22 km south of Rethymno, Kourtaliotiko Gorge stretches 3 km and is one of Rethymnon’s most breathtaking natural attractions. It begins at the village of Koxare and flows between the mountains Kouroupis (984 m) and Xiro Oros (Dry Mountain – 904 m). The canyon’s towering cliffs reach a height of 600 meters and are filled with openings and caves, home to significant fauna species. The Kourtaliotis River runs through the canyon, flowing to Lake Preveli after merging with Frati Gorge. The springs of Kourtaliotis are one of the gorge’s most delightful attractions.

The town retains its old aristocratic charm, with buildings dating back to the 16th century, arched doorways, stone staircases, Byzantine and Hellenic-Roman remains, a small harbor, and narrow streets, making it an ideal place for a leisurely stroll around the cafes and little stores with a view of the lighthouse.
