Mekele-Wukro

Wukro - The journey from Mekele to Wukro spans 47 km, where visitors can explore Cherqos Wukro. This church is typically described as having a cruciform or “cross-in-square” layout. It is often associated with other churches sharing this floor plan, such as Abreha we Atsbeha and Mikael Imba. The interior of the structure is divided into three or five aisles, depending on the description of the intermediary supports in the transverse section, as noted by Ruth Plant. The cruciform design is highlighted by the barrel vault aligned with the apse and the sanctuary housing the tabot. Plant identified Axumite details serving as a frieze above the columns in the three arms of the crossing. The column shafts are chamfered, rising from bases on the floor, and the capitals of the smaller columns are squared with elliptical chamfered edges. Plant observed that the bracket capitals of the columns at the crossing are not as refined as those of Abreha we Atsbeha.
