The Meskel Festival, a significant event in the Ethiopian Orthodox calendar, is celebrated throughout Ethiopia on September 26th and 27th. It marks the discovery of the True Holy Cross of Christ by Queen Helena (Saint Helena) in the fourth century. The festivities feature the lighting of a large bonfire called Demera. The most vibrant celebrations can be witnessed in Addis Ababa at the renowned Meskel Square. Meskel is also celebrated with great enthusiasm in various regions, particularly in the North and South of Ethiopia. In 2013, UNESCO recognized the Meskel Festival as part of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity.
