Day One: Addis Ababa – Awash National Park

Welcome to Ethiopia! Upon arrival, the operator will meet you at the airport or hotel and then drive you to Awash National Park, located 225 kilometers east of Addis Ababa. The park’s southern boundary runs along the Awash River and spans 756 square kilometers of acacia woodland and grassland. In the park’s southern area, the Awash River gorge features stunning waterfalls. In the upper Kudu Valley at Filwoha, there are hot springs surrounded by palm trees. In the evening, enjoy a short game drive to observe local wildlife such as oryx, baboons, greater and lesser kudu, warthogs, gazelles, and Columbus monkeys. You might even be fortunate enough to spot leopards, lions, and other big cats. The park’s landscapes are breathtaking, offering views over the Awash Gorge. Today, you can explore deep into the park, near the hot springs. Later, after observing hyenas around Awash Park, spend the night at Doho Lodge.

At the summit (a three-hour uphill walk; the 4WD track is no longer drivable), the 360-degree view is spectacular, and the elliptical caldera, which measures an impressive 3.5 kilometers in diameter, is quite an eerie sight in the morning when the steam vents are visible.

Situated in the Rift Valley, Awash National Park is home to a diverse range of plains wildlife and offers tremendous birdwatching opportunities, with over 400 species recorded here.
The park covers an area of 756 square kilometres, comprised mainly of acacia and grassland, but with an interesting range of volcanic landscapes. In the open areas and grass plains you should see grazing zebra alongside Beisa oryx, kudu, Soemmerring’s gazelle and Swayne’s hartebeest.
