- Mount Entoto - Welcome to Ethiopia! Upon arrival, the operator will greet you at the airport or your hotel and provide a fresh perspective on Addis Ababa, often regarded as the African Capital City/Headquarters. The journey typically begins with a drive to Mount Entoto, the highest peak in the Entoto Mountains, offering a panoramic view of the city. This allows the freedom to stop if anything catches your interest, and the operator is happy to answer any questions along the way. The mountain stands at 3,200 meters above sea level and is densely covered with eucalyptus trees, imported from Australia during Menelik II’s reign and mostly planted during Emperor Haile Selassie’s time. It is sometimes called the “lung of Addis Ababa” due to its dense forest, which is a vital source of firewood and was historically used for building materials.
- Shiro Meda Market - At Shiro Meda market, visitors can explore or purchase colorful handwoven scarves and dresses for both men and women, made from cotton and adorned with vibrant embroidery. If time permits, visitors can also see small startups in the yellow condominium working on weaving these traditional Ethiopian garments. This stop highlights local artistry, where bartering for the best price can be an enjoyable experience if something catches your eye.
- Ethnological Museum - The tour continues with a visit to the Ethnological Museum, located within the Addis Ababa University compound. This museum, distinct from the National Museum yet equally captivating, was once a palace donated to the University as a symbol of the Emperor’s commitment to education. It showcases a diverse collection of artifacts and everyday items from various ethnic groups in Ethiopia.
- Holy Trinity Cathedral - The tour also includes a drive to the Trinity Cathedral Church, the highest-ranking Orthodox cathedral in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Built to commemorate Ethiopia’s liberation from Italian occupation, it is the second most important place of worship in Ethiopia, after the Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion in Axum. This cathedral was constructed by Emperor Haile Selassie I, and it houses the tombs of HIM Haile Selassie and his wife, Empress Menen.
- St. George’s Cathedral - This octagonal-shaped cathedral is located in the heart of Addis Ababa and was built to honor St. George for his invaluable support during the first Ethio-Italian war, the Battle of Adwa. The interior is beautifully painted, and it is the coronation site of King Haile Selassie I. A small museum within the cathedral contains an ancient collection of books, crosses, and other church treasures, providing insight into the Ethiopian Orthodox Christian faith.
