National Museum of Ethiopia - Begin the city tour of Addis Ababa at the National Museum of Ethiopia, renowned for its exceptional quality and diverse exhibits. Among its archaeological displays is the 3.5 million-year-old fossil of Lucy (or Dinkinesh, meaning ‘thou art wonderful’ in the local language), a hominid woman of the Australopithecus Afarensis species. Lucy’s discovery in 1974 revolutionized our understanding of human ancestry, showing that our ancestors walked the earth 2.5 million years earlier than previously thought. The museum also houses remarkable artifacts from the pre-Axumite civilization.
Meyazia 27 Square Monument - The Meyazia 27 Square Monument, also known as Dillachin (Victory Monument), features a Lion of Judah and a circle of relief figures and monumental panels celebrating Ethiopia’s liberation.
Yekatit 12 Martyrs Square - Located near Addis Ababa University and the Lion Zoo, Yekatit 12 Martyrs Square Monument holds significant historical importance.
Ethnological Museum - Continue the tour with a visit to the Ethnological Museum, situated within the Addis Ababa University grounds. Once a palace for Emperor Haile Selassie, known as “Genete Leul” (Heaven of the Prince), this museum offers a captivating array of artifacts and everyday objects from various Ethiopian ethnic groups, distinct from the National Museum.
Chiromeda Market - Before heading to Mount Entoto, stop by Chiromeda Market, which offers a variety of traditional clothing such as dresses, shawls, scarves, bed covers, napkins, and men’s shirts, all locally handmade. Stopping here is optional.
Mount Entoto - Entoto Hill, the highest point in Addis Ababa, reaches up to 3,200 meters above sea level. The mountain is densely covered with eucalyptus trees imported from Australia during Menelik II’s reign, earning it the nickname “lung of Addis Ababa.” Enjoy a panoramic view of the city before returning for lunch at one of Addis Ababa’s finest restaurants serving local cuisine. A 50-minute lunch break is planned, but the entrance fee to Entoto Park is not included.
Tomoca Coffee | Atlas Branch | ቶሞካ ቡና | አትላስ - After a delightful lunch, visit Tomoca Coffee to enjoy the finest coffee in Addis Ababa. Coffee beans and powder are available for purchase.
Merkato - Merkato is Africa’s largest open-air market, spanning several square miles and employing approximately 13,000 people across 7,100 businesses. Explore Merkato to see how local entrepreneurs contribute to the environment.
Lion of Judah - The Lion of Judah monument is a statue symbolizing Ethiopian Emperors and Ethiopia.
Minilik Square Bus Stop - Drive by Minilik II Square to view the emperor’s monument.
St. George’s Cathedral - St. George’s Cathedral, one of Addis Ababa’s oldest, was built by Emperor Menelik to commemorate the Battle of Adwa against Italian colonialists.
Wildlife, Birds, Gorge, and Debre Libanos Monastery
Debre Libanos - Depart from the hotel at 8:00 am or earlier, heading north on the Gojjam road to Debre Libanos, approximately 110 km from Addis Ababa, or a two-hour drive. Upon arrival, explore Debre Libanos, a significant monastic center for Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity, founded by the 13th-century mystic Saint Teklehaimanot. Near the church, visitors can climb to the cave of St. Teklehaimanot, where monks may show the remains of around 300 monks massacred in 1936 by Italian invaders. Mussolini and the fascist authorities viewed the Ethiopian Orthodox Church as a pillar of Ethiopian identity and believed that by committing this atrocity, they could subdue the Church and the Ethiopian people. Instead, it fueled resistance.
Ethio-German Park Hotel - Proceed to the nearest hotel for a quick lunch while enjoying views of the Jemma River, a Nile tributary, with a nearly 1,000-meter drop to the valley below.
Portuguese Bridge - After lunch, walk about 300 meters to see the famous 16th-century bridge, known to tourists as the Portuguese Bridge. Although its narrow span resembles Portuguese style, it was built by Ethiopians. The cascade below, especially during the rainy season, is even more impressive. Spot Ethiopia’s endemic mammals, the Gelada or bleeding-heart baboon, and a variety of vultures, including Lamergeyer’s, Ruppell’s, and Lappet-faced vultures.
After visiting these sites, return to Addis Ababa, arriving around 5:30 pm.
