It is renowned as the home of the original Ark of the Covenant. Your tour of this ancient city includes visits to St. Mary’s Church, the sanctuary Chapel housing the Ark of the Covenant, the coronation yard, the Stelae Park, the Tombs of Kaleb and his son Gebre Meskel, Ezana’s inscriptions, and the ruins of the Queen of Sheba’s palace. Please note, only one specially chosen guardian monk is permitted to enter the chapel where the Ark is kept.
Axum - Lalibela
Rock-Hewn Churches of Lalibela - Embark on an early morning flight to Lalibela (08:00), renowned as the most famous of Ethiopia’s historical sites. After lunch, begin your tour of the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, starting with the Northwestern Cluster of churches - Bete Medhane Alem, Bete Maryam, Bete Meskel, Bete Danaghel, and Bete Mikael. Following lunch, continue to the Southeastern Cluster of churches – Bete Gabriel-Rufael, Bete Merkorios, Bete Amanual, and Bete Abba Libanos. Conclude your visit with the most renowned church – Bete Giyorgis, dedicated to Ethiopia’s patron saint, Saint George.
