Erta Ale - In Semera, travelers will board a Toyota Landcruiser to journey into the Danakil in a convoy. The drive into the Danakil Depression begins around 9 AM. Initially, the roads out of Semera are smooth and paved, offering beautiful views of the Afar landscape as you leave the town. As the journey continues towards Afdera Town (Salt Lake), the roads become rougher until reaching the Danakil desert. Here, the terrain is a mix of solidified lava, rock, and sand, with occasional palm-lined oases. A stop for lunch is planned before proceeding to the base camp of the Erta Ale volcano. The drive from Semera to Dodom takes approximately 7 hours.
The cooking team will be ready to prepare dinner. As the sun sets, the group will embark on a 1.5-hour hike up Erta Ale. Arrival at the crater rim is expected around 7:00 PM, where the fiery lava lake awaits. After spending some time at the volcano, the group will descend to the campsite for dinner.
Ertale-Hamed Ela-Sunset (Lake Asale)
Hamed Ela (Dallol)-Semera
Danakil Depression - An early morning drive to Dallol reveals one of the most breathtaking geological phenomena on Earth. Known for being one of the hottest and lowest places on the planet, with an average temperature of 35 degrees Celsius and days exceeding 48 degrees Celsius, it receives an annual rainfall of just 100 to 200 mm, making it one of the most inhospitable places on Earth. The kaleidoscopic landscape, with its acidic colors and fumaroles of greens, reds, and yellows formed by acidic springs and salt mounds, creates an otherworldly scene. Visitors can observe the local Afar people mining salt, loading it onto camel caravans, and the formation of salt canyons. Breakfast is served at the salt canyon around 9 AM, followed by a drive to Semera between 3:30 and 4:00 PM, and then directly to Semera airport for a flight to Addis.

The Danakil Depression is in the Afar region of northern Ethiopia, is one of the hottest and lowest place on the planet. A searing hot, brutal desert landscape dotted with stunning geological formations, salt lakes, acid springs, volcanoes, salt canyon and salt flats. Danakil Depression (or Afar Depression) exhibits some uncommon wonders: lava that burns blue, bright yellow hot springs, and lakes of bubbling mud.
