Assin Manso Ancestral Slave River Park - After breakfast, depart for Cape Coast in Ghana’s Central Region, an area with a significant impact on the lives of Africans in the diaspora. Travel through small villages to reach Assin Manso, the burial site of two former slaves from Jamaica and the US, reinterred here in August 1998 during Ghana’s first Emancipation Day Celebration. Visit the “Slave River,” where ancestors were washed before confinement in the slave dungeons to await shipment. Duration: 10 hours. No meals included on this day.

August 2019 marks 400 years since the first documented arrival of a slave ship in Virginia, which led to the intensification of the tragic Middle Passage. Hundreds of descendants of formerly enslaved Africans will make a proud return to their ancestral homeland.

The journey will take them to Ghana: the birthplace of Kwame Nkrumah, the leader of Ghana’s independence and a co-founder of the Organization of African Unity; the nation where the esteemed pan-Africanist Dr. W. E. B. DuBois spent his final years.
