Arrival in Accra
Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park - Upon landing at Kotoka International Airport, proceed through immigration, exit, and meet the knowledgeable Cultural Tour guide. Depending on your flight arrival time, the following sites may be visited today. After a brief introduction and orientation, enjoy a panoramic sightseeing tour of Accra. Experience a scenic drive through Accra in a private vehicle. Visit Jamestown Community, one of Accra’s most historic neighborhoods, where history is present on every corner. It is renowned for its lighthouses, originally constructed in 1875 by the British as a navigational aid for trading vessels sailing through the Gulf of Guinea. Although the original structure was destroyed, a larger and improved lighthouse completed in 1921 is still operational today. Experience the vibrant atmosphere at the Fish Market by the seashore as fishermen dock their boats and fishmongers sell their catch. Afterwards, proceed to the hotel; after check-in, your guide, who will accompany you throughout your stay, will brief you on what to expect during your time in Ghana. The day concludes at the Brazil House, where you will learn about the seven Afro-Brazilian families who returned to settle in Ghana in 1836. Familiar Brazilian/Portuguese surnames such as De Souza, Palmares, Azumah, Amorin, Da Costa, Santos, De Medeiros, and Olympio are common in this part of Accra. The rest of the day is at leisure.
Accra - Cape Coast - Elmina
Cape Coast Castle - Cape Coast Castle is a European-built fortress located on the central coastline of Ghana. Since its initial construction in 1652, the Castle served as a trading post for European nations and as the headquarters of British colonial administration for the Gold Coast Colony. Today, the Castle is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Elmina Castle - St. George Castle, also known as Elmina Castle, is situated in the Central Region of Ghana, about a 3.5-hour drive along the coast from Accra. It is the oldest European structure in sub-Saharan Africa. Construction of Elmina Castle was initiated by the Portuguese in 1482 and was completed in 1486. Later colonized by the Dutch in 1637, it was during this period that Elmina reached its peak status. Upon visiting, you will experience the tangible history of the slave trade, the impact of which is still felt beyond the shores of Africa today. Most visitors to Ghana tour Elmina Castle due to its history as a major trans-Atlantic slave hub. Originally, Elmina Castle was not built for the purpose of holding and trading slaves, but rather as a trading post for gold and other African goods. The name “Elmina” is derived from the Portuguese name “Da Costa de el Mina de Ouro” (The Coast of Gold Mines).
