The National Museum of Ghana is located in the capital city, Accra. It is the largest and oldest of the six museums under the administration of the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB). The museum building was opened on March 5, 1957, as part of Ghana’s independence celebrations. The museum was designed by two Ghanaians, Drake and Lasdun.
The National Museum of Ghana is an educational, scientific, and cultural institution that acquires, documents, preserves, exhibits, and fosters scholarly study. It also serves the public’s appreciation of works of art, specimens, cultural, and historical artifacts that represent our unique African culture.
W.E.B. DuBois Center - Explore the museum and the history of W.E.B. Du Bois.
W.E.B. Du Bois was an American sociologist, historian, author, editor, and activist who was the most important Black protest leader in the United States during the first half of the 20th century. He was instrumental in the creation of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1909.
Du Bois was already well-known as one of the foremost Black intellectuals of his era. The first Black American to earn a PhD from Harvard University, Du Bois published widely before becoming NAACP’s director of publicity and research and starting the organization’s official journal, The Crisis, in 1910.
Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park - Visit the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum, the final resting place of Ghana’s first president. It is the spot where Nkrumah declared Ghana’s independence. On the premises is a museum displaying objects from various stages of his life.
After our visit to Nkrumah Memorial Park, we will continue to the Accra Art Center, where most souvenirs in Ghana are made, and also enjoy drum lessons.

It is part of the larger Independence Square, also known as Black Star Square, which is arguably the second-largest city square in the world.
The Black Star Gate was commissioned by Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah, to signify triumph in the fight against colonialism, victory in the struggle for independence, and sovereignty for the newly independent nation.
James Town Lighthouse - James Town, the oldest part of Accra, is a vibrant and historic neighborhood brimming with culture. Originally established as a British colonial settlement in the 17th century, it’s home to Accra’s first lighthouse, which still stands today.
