Discover Assin Manso Slave Market & River
Assin Manso Ancestral Slave River Park - The journey begins with a drive from Accra to Cape Coast, stopping at the Assin Manso Slave Market. This site marks the final point where slaves took their last bath before embarking on a three-week trek through the virgin forest to the castles, from where they were shipped to unknown destinations. Visitors will gain insights into the slave journey and connect with ancestors at the slave river, where the last bath was taken.
Cape Coast Castle - Following the tour, the journey continues to Cape Coast for lunch and a visit to the Cape Coast Castle. This castle is one of approximately forty “slave castles,” or large commercial forts, constructed on the Gold Coast of West Africa by European traders. Initially established as a Portuguese “feitoria” or trading post in 1555, the Swedish Africa Company later built a timber fort there in 1653.
Discover Elmina
Elmina Castle - The day begins in Ghana’s most historic town, with a visit to Elmina Castle, the oldest European structure south of the Sahara, Fort Jago, and the salt mining village. A walk through the town will pass ancient historical buildings, including the 17th Century Dutch Cemetery. Visitors will learn about the historical and ancient buildings of Elmina from the era of slavery, immersing themselves in the culture and traditions of the Ghanaian people. If time permits, there will be visits to local homes to observe the lifestyle and gain deeper insights into the daily lives of the local community.
