- Osu Castle - Osu Castle, also known as Fort Christiansborg, is a historic 17th-century castle situated on the lively shores of Osu, in Ghana’s capital, Accra, along the Atlantic Ocean’s Gulf of Guinea. Originally constructed by the Danes, the castle has been under the control of Denmark, Norway, Portugal, the Akwamu, Britain, and finally post-Independence Ghana, undergoing several reconstructions. Christiansborg Castle stands out among other castles and forts as it served as the seat of government in Ghana for most of its history, with some interruptions, until the government moved to the Jubilee House.
The castle, recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage site, has been the subject of archaeological investigations in some areas since 2014.
- Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park - This park is the final resting place of Ghana’s first president. It features an intriguing collection of Nkrumah’s personal items, including the smock he wore when declaring Ghana’s independence, along with personal correspondence and numerous photographs of him with various world leaders.
- Makola Market - Accra’s largest open-air market is bustling with goods, people, scents, and sounds, capturing the vibrant atmosphere of a West African market.
This fascinating place is filled with narrow alleyways and women carrying large bowls and packages on their heads. It’s an excellent spot for shopping, offering a wide range of items at reasonable prices, though it can be quite crowded. Visitors can find almost everything needed for their homes.
A guide can show the more interesting parts of the market and help find great vantage points for excellent photo opportunities. Plan to spend the day, as there is plenty to explore.
- Independence Square - Also known as Black Star Square, this site hosts Ghana’s Independence Day parade on March 6th each year. The square features monuments commemorating Ghana’s independence struggle, including the Independence Arch, Black Star Gate, and the Liberation Day Monument.
Independence Square is the second-largest city square in the world, following Tiananmen Square in Beijing, China.
- Kane Kwei Carpentry Workshop - This workshop is one of the original creators of the famous fantasy coffins, now collected and exhibited as contemporary art worldwide. Caskets shaped like birds, fish, airplanes, shoes, beer bottles, cars, and other imaginative designs are displayed and sometimes sold as miniatures.
- Labadi Pleasure Beach - A perfect spot for rest, relaxation, and unwinding before departure. It’s a great way to celebrate the completion of this tour.
