The Grand Mosque is a must see! - The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi is not just the largest mosque in the UAE—it’s the third largest in the world and a true architectural marvel. With 82 gleaming domes, 1,096 intricately carved columns, and a construction cost of over $500 million, this iconic structure is a stunning fusion of craftsmanship and scale. Built over 11 years, from 1996 to 2007, it brought together master artisans from around the globe to create a masterpiece that blends tradition with extravagance.
The mosque is by far the most visited attraction in Abu Dhabi—and it’s easy to see why. A place of worship that welcomes thousands of visitors and worshippers each day, it offers a breathtaking setting that’s as spiritually uplifting as it is visually awe-inspiring. That said, capturing a photo without anyone in the frame is a rare feat—so it’s best to arrive with realistic expectations.
Inside, the serenity of the main prayer hall is a beautiful contrast to the grandeur that surrounds it. Here, you’ll find colossal chandeliers adorned with Swarovski crystals and the world’s largest hand-knotted Persian carpet, adding quiet elegance to the lavish setting.
Whether you’re drawn by the cultural significance, the spectacular design, or the peaceful atmosphere, the Grand Mosque is a must-visit when in Abu Dhabi.

Full day drive Dubai to Abu Dhabi return - The tour was a full on full day trip to Abu
Dhabi in a SUV. There were just three of us from 9.00am to 7.15pm so only one other pick up besides the two of us. As it was a Sunday there was little traffic on the highway. First stop was the Grand mosque where we joined other groups with another guide Richard to show all
40 of us around the mosque. There were many other groups there too so it was crowded and the tour took about two hours. It is about a kilometre to walk from the car park to the start of the tour with many others too. Weather was 35c so it was a bit hot but mainly in the shade and part underground. We took many photos. The next stop was the ex royal palace now a hotel. It was way over the top and super extravagant with a good view of the city. Time spent there was 20 mins. We decided not to go to the heritage village as it was all outdoors and we have been there before. So we then went to the Louvre Museum for two hours which took us two hours to go through properly with great exhibits from pre Egyptian to today.
On the way home as it was getting dark we did a drive through of Yas Island.
The driver Syed was great and altered the tour times to suit us. Michael and Adelle
