Commissioned by Al-Mu’izz li-Din Allah of the Fatimid Caliphate in 970 for the newly established capital, its name is believed to refer to Fatimah, the daughter of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, who was given the title az-Zahrā, meaning the shining or resplendent one. It was the first mosque established in Cairo, a city now known as “the City of a Thousand Minarets.”
