DAY 2:
The climb commences at the village of Nale Moru (1,950 meters), passing through cultivated land before entering the pine forest. Keep an eye out for Kilimanjaro Colobus monkeys in the treetops, recognizable by their white-fringed ‘capes’ and tails. The trek takes 3 to 4 hours, reaching the first camp on the edge of the moorland zone where the forest begins to thin out at First Cave at 8,500 feet/2,600 meters. Overnight at 1st Cave Camp.
DAY 3:
The morning involves a steady ascent to Second Cave at 11,300 feet/3,450 meters, offering stunning views of Kibo and the eastern ice fields on the crater rim. Continue to Third Cave, taking 3 to 4 hours to reach 12,800 feet/3,800 meters for an overnight camp. Overnight at 3rd Cave Camp.
DAY 4:
Continue ascending on the east side of Kibo, crossing the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, taking 4 to 5 hours to reach Kibo Hut at 15,000 feet/4,700 meters. Spend the rest of the day resting in preparation for the final ascent, which begins around midnight. Overnight at Kibo Camp.
DAY 5:
An early start for the summit on steep, heavy scree to arrive at Gilman’s Point at 18,640 feet/5,681 meters in time for sunrise. Those wishing to reach the highest point in Africa can embark on a roughly three-hour excursion to Uhuru Peak at 19,340 feet/5,896 meters, passing close to the spectacular glaciers and ice cliffs that still cover much of the summit area. The descent to Kibo is surprisingly swift, and after some refreshments, continue descending to reach the final campsite at Horombo at 12,000 feet/3,700 meters, taking 11 to 15 hours. Overnight at Horombo Camp.
DAY 6:
A steady descent through the moorland to Mandara Hut, then downward through the lush forest on a well-maintained path to the National Park gate at Marangu (1,830 meters), taking 5 to 7 hours. You will be met and transferred to your hotel for dinner and an overnight stay.
