Our initial destination is Byōdō-in, a Buddhist temple established in the city during the late Heian period. It serves as a shared temple for the Pure Land and Tendai sects.
It’s time for lunch! If you finish early, feel free to enjoy some shopping before the afternoon activities commence.
- Fukujuen Uji (Uji Tea Factory) - After visiting the Tea Museum, our next stop is an engaging tea experience. We will have the opportunity to create our own matcha using a traditional stone mill.
- Ujigami Shrine - Following the matcha experience, we will visit Ujigami Shrine. This shrine was constructed to protect the nearby Byodo-in Temple and is located next to Uji Shrine. In 1994, it was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the “Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto.”
- The Tale of Genji Museum - Our final stop is the Tale of Genji Museum. Here, the world of the classic Japanese novel “The Tale of Genji” from the early 11th century is brought to life through projections, models, and exhibits.
We will return to JR Uji Station to conclude the tour. However, if you wish to spend more time in the city center, please inform us at any time.
