Highlights
  • Zaanse Schans - Our driver will pick you up from your accommodation or another pick-up location for this 6-hour private tour. Our first stop on this tour is the heritage sight Zaanse Schans, a picturesque village with wooden windmills and charming green wooden houses from the 18th and 19th century lining the water, 25 minutes from Amsterdam. Explore the windmill village lining the water, learn how clogs are made, taste some cheese, and enter a working windmill.
  • Volendam - After this we will continue to the fishing village Volendam at lake Markermeer, where you can see the traditional fishing boats and the folklorist costumes of the Volendam people. Here you can have a stroll in the village, shop for souvenirs or eat a delicious fish lunch. Also, there are a few museums worth a visit.
  • Marken - From Volendam you can take a boat to the former island village of Marken, connected since 1957 to the mainland by a causeway. This peaceful fishing village in lake Markermeer is famous for its wooden green houses built on stilts, its typical drawbridges, and the traditional life of the (former) islanders. After the tour you will be picked up by our driver in Marken or Volendam and driven back to your pick-up location.

Additional Information

Our exploration begins at the historic spot, Zaanse Schans. This quaint village, a short 25-minute journey from Amsterdam, displays an array of wooden windmills and attractive green wooden homes from the 18th and 19th centuries along the waterfront. Engage with the local culture by visiting the windmill village on the waterfront, understanding clog craftsmanship, sampling cheese, and stepping into a functioning windmill.

Following this, we will proceed to Volendam, a fishing village on the shores of Lake Markermeer. Here, you can witness the customary fishing vessels and the ethnographic clothing of the Volendam residents. Enjoy a leisurely walk around the village, souvenir shopping, or devouring a mouth-watering fish lunch. A few museums in the area are also well worth visiting.

Our journey continues with a boat ride from Volendam to the past island community of Marken, linked to the mainland by a causeway since 1957. Known for its green wooden houses on stilts, characteristic drawbridges, and the traditional lifestyle of the island inhabitants, this serene fishing hamlet on Lake Markermeer is a must-visit.

Amazing Tour of Dutch Countryside - We booked this as an opportunity to get out of the city and explore more of the Dutch countryside. This was definitely one of the highlights of our trip. Our driver / guide, Robin (pardon if I have misspelled) was extremely friendly and knowledgeable about all the areas we visited. We had a great time getting to know more of the history and culture. He arrived on time, drove very safely the entire time, kept us on a comfortable schedule all day, and gave us an excellent experience. It does take the full 6 hours but, if you have the time during your visit, would highly recommend this.
