Additional Information

Yangon is deeply rooted in history. As a Mon village, it was initially recognized as Dagon, named after the Golden Shwedagon Pagoda. In May 1755, King Alaungpaya rechristened it as Yangon, translating to ‘The end of Strife’, following his victory over the ancient Mon Kingdom. The contemporary history of Yangon is evident in its colonial architecture, with each surviving building bearing the unmistakable stamp of the past.
