Additional Information

Embark on a journey with us to our most loved destination, Mou Waho Island, situated on Lake Wanaka. Experience the uniqueness of an island in a lake, on an island, in another lake, on an island in the sea! Mou Waho Island, a protected nature reserve, is the habitat of numerous native birds of New Zealand, including the intriguing flightless Weka. A brief hike will lead you to the island’s summit, where you’ll witness the stunning panoramic views of the Arethusa pool, Lake Wanaka and its encompassing mountain peaks.

Our water taxi departs from Wanaka Marina bi-daily, covers a distance of 15km across Lake Wanaka, bypasses Mou Tapu Island and the vertical cliff of fisherman’s cove before reaching Mou Waho Island. During the journey on the crystal clear waters, the amiable and well-versed skipper will enlighten you about the interesting geology of the alps and the glaciers that formed the lake.

The trip includes a 1.5 hour independent exploration walk on the island.

  • Minimum numbers apply
  • A 20/30 minute walk up hill is involved. (Optional)
  • Due to uneven surfaces and the steepness in places, the walk is not recommended for those with walking disabilities but they are more than welcome to join us on the boat trip and skip the walk and stay at the bottom of the island.

Lake on island on huge lake on South Island on South Pacific - The island has just the right amount of hiking trails, and there are many New Zealand birds such as fantails and wekas. It's just the right size for a leisurely stroll. For some reason, there is a lake at the top of the mountain. On the boat ride to and from the island, the captain gives us a lecture on various things such as the glacial landforms in the area, the formation of the island, the gold mines, and more.

Fun trip, good for bird watching and a lovely, scenic hike - The tour guide was friendly and super knowledgeable. He described the geology and history of the area, and was easy to talk to. The ride to the island was easy and really scenic, despite the weather (it was really windy and rainy in patches). The walk uphill on Mou Waho as at least 30 to 40 minutes and is a solid uphill climb, and you get to listen to beautiful birdsong the whole way. The scenery at top is incredible. If the weather is windy, dress warmly! And dress and layers because you will get warm, climbing uphill.

Beautiful Mao Wahu - The tour guide Brett was so knowledgeable and great. We had plenty of time to get up to the top and enjoy the view, then come down. It's a steep climb to the top but well worth it.

Beautiful, must-do in Wanaka - We had booked the combination with the visit to Mou Waho and the 4x4 tour. A few days before the excursion was to take place, we received an email from Krystle with the weather forecast and that we could also split excursions and have a better chance of good weather. I gladly took advantage of this and the trip to Mou Waho was perfect. Brent provided a lot of information and was very friendly. The island itself is very beautiful, just like the rest of Wanaka, but a steep climb! We enjoyed this day. The next day we would go with the 4x4. In the morning we received a message that it was very stormy and whether we wanted to continue. Ultimately we decided together to cancel it. So kind that they thought along with us! The previous discount on the booked trip was also retained and the price was adjusted to Mou Waho only. Super! If you are in Wanaka then this is a must. Nothing but praise for these people :)

Amazing all around! - This was such an amazing experience! Our guide was super friendly, energetic and informative about the Lake and its flora and fauna. We enjoyed walking up to the lake and having our picnic lunch we had brought with us, followed by a nice soaking of the feet in Lake Wanaka when we came back down. We even got to see some geckos! I highly recommend this tour. You will not be disappointed.
