Must Do - We used Troll Expeditions and met our guide in Vik. There were 6 of us and another 5 or 6 people joined us. We loaded into a 4 wheel drive van and headed out on a 40 minute or so drive on a very bumpy gravel road to the glacier/ice cave. Once we arrived, we had a short hike and climb to get up to the cave. It was a warm sunny day and water was pouring off the glacier and entrance to the ice cave. Since the glacier also consists of volcanic ash, we were rained on with a combination of water and ash. Fortunately, we were dressed appropriately (recommend not wearing white). Once inside the cave, we moved fairly easily through the cave. It was very cool to experience but a much shorter journey than expected possibly because the area around the cave was melting so rapidly. After exiting the cave at the other end, we were basically in a valley of the glacier. Here, our guide let us explore a little on our own and then led us on an easy climb up the valley to the edge of the glacier for some great views. After a few minutes of pictures and glacier info, our guide led us back down and back through the cave. This was a great and truly unique experience that was one of the highlights of our trip.

AVOID this tour- find a more professional one - This trip was not worth the time or money. The ice cave was not so beautiful as to make it worth the hours in an-overcrowded Ford sprinter (not a jeep) with one butt cheek hanging off the side of the bench and a large group of Americans bragging about their banking jobs. The sun was setting when we got there so the lighting was bad for photos. The tour guide let the large group do whatever they wanted, leading us to spend a long time waiting as they took photos with and without their jackets on and in different poses and combinations of people. Alternatively, we took an Arctic Adventures snowmobiling and ice cave tour from Skjól Campground where the sprinters were outfitted with individual seats so everyone could be comfortable, and the tour guides helped move people along so that we got home at a reasonable time and no one was stuck sitting outside a cave for 30 minutes just waiting for others to be done. We were supposed to be on the morning tour (hoping for good light) but our ticket had the wrong address on it and the tour left without us- what a headache. We had arrived early and called multiple times but the booking agent couldn’t get us in touch with the tour operator. The new ticket they gave us for the afternoon tour also had the wrong address, but luckily we were in the area the tour left from for lunch and flagged them down. All in all the whole thing was an unprofessional mess, and I would actively avoid both the booking agent (Mariana Travel) and the tour company (Tröll). I would avoid this tour at all costs- we truly wish we had not lost a day in Iceland to this negative experience.
