Udabno - Landscapes of the Gareja Desert
This is a trip to a completely different Georgia: you will discover the stunning, unlike anything else, the nature of a real stone desert, where there is no water, and the grass turns yellow and becomes dry in the middle of summer. On the way to the monastery, we will stop at such places of the Gareja Desert, where the breathtaking and harsh beauty of the views is breathtaking. Natlismtsemeli Monastery - Monastery of the Baptist.
The cave monastery is located between rocks and caves. The monastery was founded in the 6th century by St. David’s disciple Father Lucian. The monastery consists of many cave temples and a central church. The journey to the time-honored cloister
Our rendezvous will be in Tbilisi before we set off in a south-eastern direction towards the boundary between Georgia and Azerbaijan. The solitary settlement you will encounter on route to the abbey, seemingly apologetic due to its positioning in a barren region, is named Udabno (translates to ‘desert’ in Georgian). As you travel, take in the native terrain of the area - a parched grassland which shifts hue with the seasons, strangely ‘designed’ hill crests and the silhouette of the Caucasus Mountains discernible in the offing. Brief intervals for capturing images at the salina and/or any other areas we fancy will be followed by our arrival at the chief destination - the still operational holy establishment.
