Highlights

Orakau and K2K (Kawakawa Bay to Kinloch) Grade 3 Distance 19km

Great Lake Trail - Embark on a mountain biking adventure along the Great Lake trail and immerse yourself in the unique vistas it offers. Ride on pumice trails that are rideable throughout the year, offering panoramic views of the lake and mountains, and you might even spot rock climbers in action.

The journey begins at the Whangamata road car park and concludes in Kinloch.

During your excursion, you’ll traverse the Orakau stream and pass through flax wetlands and native forests until you reach the stunning Kawakawa Bay, situated on the lake’s edge. Along the route, you’ll catch glimpses of Tongariro National Park. From Kawakawa Bay, you’ll ascend through dense native forest to a headland that boasts spectacular views of Lake Taupo. After reaching the headland, you’ll descend into Kinloch.

The trail includes some climbs that are brief and less demanding, making it suitable for novice or less fit cyclists.

For those who wish to only tackle the Orakau segment, there’s an option for a boat transfer back to Kinloch for an additional fee.

W2K and headloop (Kinloch to Whakaipo Bay) Grade 3 Distance 22.2km

Great Lake Trail - The trail ascends through native bush to a headland, offering expansive views of the lake before descending back into Kinloch.

Riders can choose to take on the Headland Loop, which meanders along the Whangamata Bluffs. The loop is surrounded by lush native bush and provides stunning views of the lake, the Kaimanawas, Karangahape Cliffs, and Tongariro National Park Taupo. Keep an ear out for the local birdlife!

After completing the loop, the trail continues on a pumice path that winds down the hillside through native bush. The route concludes by passing through farmland, alongside sheep paddocks, and into Whakaipo Bay, a pristine reserve on the shores of Lake Taupo that retains its natural and unspoiled charm.

The climb is manageable for novice or less fit riders and offers a rewarding experience with breathtaking views, exhilarating descents, and an overall satisfying mountain biking adventure.

Highlight of our Lake Taupo Trip - Lisa was great to work with and very accommodating. Brit was the best tour guide! Loved the trail, the scenery was very beautiful, and the lunches were the best! We would do it again in a heart beat.
