Embark on a caving adventure in Iceland’s ancient subterranean lava tubes at Raufarholshellir lava tunnel! Nestled deep below the breathtaking Blue Mountains (Bláhnjúkur), the Raufarholshellir lava tunnel harbors a geological marvel with its rocky formations, ice, and volcanic pits. Accompanied by a local guide and equipped with professional caving gear, traverse through the tunnels to the cave, unveiling Iceland’s surreal vistas at their best and experiencing the inner processes of a volcanic outburst.

Raufarhólshellir
The tunnel is located less than 30 minutes drive (approximately 30 km) from Reykjavík and accessible by all vehicles. Driving from Reykjavík east on Route 1 and drive for about 18 km. Turn right onto Route 39 (Þorlákshöfn) and drive for another 12 km. The parking area will be on your left-hand side.

A Look at the Cave - My husband and I enjoyed going into the cave. I was concerned about the walk but it was relatively easy. The company provides you with equipment needed to take the quick trekk. The guide was knowledgeable.

Lava tunnel - Great introduction to lava caves. Guides are very knowledgeable. It was super fascinating and by the end I wanted to do the excursion/longer tour!!!

Magnificent colours in a diffident world - Great experience in the “real” tunnel with magnificent colours and stone formations.
You need a good portion of condition for the three hour hike. Loved the knowledge and experience of our guide.

Cool (literally) lava tunnel - We really enjoyed this short but sweet group tour. Our guide Alex was fun and entertaining. He was full of knowledge and jokes that kept us smiling. If you enjoy caves, you'll enjoy this tour.

Bedst tur ever - Excellent tur with the guide Kristoffer and he was the best guide ever, funny, competent, good for humor, took ours foto in the cage, tolked about lava, nature, Mountains, NASA, Mars, he took care of us an gav time for everything, drives fine, comfortable transport, excellent valuet for money , wi fi on board,

Fun, entertaining, informative. Worth it. - Very fun experience. Our guide was knowledgeable in the history and geology of Ísland 🇮🇸, plus engaging and funny. The colours inside the lava tunnel are just amazing. The side jaunt into the smaller cave, with the iridescent bacteria, also cool. Would recommend this experience. Wear a jacket and hiking boots. Only caveat: was not at all a small group experience - our group had 36 people in it!
