Toronto Island is the sole island chain in Western Lake Ontario, boasting a rich variety of flora and fauna, and a history that traces back to the earliest Native American inhabitants. Interestingly, the site for Toronto, originally named York, was selected because of the excellent natural harbor formed by what was then the Toronto Peninsula. Wards and Algonquin Island are among the city’s oldest neighborhoods, with some descendants of the original settlers still residing there today.
