On the site of today’s Sghişoara was the Roman military guard post Sandava, founded by German settlers in the North Rhine region, who had been invited to settle in Transylvania by the king of Hungary, Géza II, to defend the eastern borders. Here, the settlers receive in use “fundus regius” (“Christian land”) and enjoy special rights and privileges.

Sighisoara, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1999, proudly features a medieval fortress that is still inhabited today. The initial fortress was constructed here in 1280. During the 14th century, skilled craftsmen, organized into powerful guilds, established themselves beneath the citadel and constructed a stone defense wall around the fortress, measuring 930 meters in length and 4 meters in height.
Rupea Citadel, known in Romanian as Cetatea Rupea, in German as Burg Reps, and in Hungarian as Kőhalmi vár, is among the oldest archaeological sites in Romania, with evidence of human settlements dating back to the Paleolithic and early Neolithic periods.
The first documented mention of the citadel is from 1324, when the Saxons rebelled against King Charles I of Hungary and sought refuge within its walls. Archaeologists believe the current citadel was built on the remnants of a former Dacian defense fort that was conquered by the Romans. The name of the citadel is derived from the Latin word “rupes,” meaning stone.
