Highlights
  • Thingvellir National Park - One of Iceland’s most famous places. This is where the Vikings assembled every summer to discuss the law, make convictions and of course practice politics of their time (something that really hasn’t changed much in 1.000 years)

The National Park is also a unique place in terms of geology for this is the place where you can clearly see how the Tectonic Plates are pulling apart in Iceland.

  • Geysir - We visit the hot spring area in Haukadalur the home of Geysir - the geyser all geysers are named after. Though the old Geysir has been dormant for some time his little brother Strokkur is erupting beautifully every few minutes.
  • Gullfoss Waterfall - This magnificent waterfall is one of the highlights of the Golden Circle tour. It is hard to describe the experience of being there. There is something about seeing thousands of tons of glacial water rushing through every second. Truly amazing.
  • Kerid Crater - This is an optional stop. A beautiful red cinder cone on the way back from the waterfall. A great way to stretch your legs and explore the volcanic side of Iceland. Admission fee is very moderate (around 3.5 US$) and is used to maintain the area.
  • Secret Lagoon - Gamla Laugin - An optional stop. A perfect last stop before driving back to Reykjavik. This lagoon is one of the oldest swimming pool in Iceland built around 100 years ago to teach people how to swim. It is primitive but has been restored in a charming way. The pool is shallow (around 3 feet deep) and full with clear warm water. Dipping into this lagoon is refreshing for both body and soul and when you walk back to your car you might feel that you are sliding rather than walking. That is how smooth your body becomes after enjoying the warm water for a while.

The admission fee is around 24 US$ per adult. Less for children and seniours.

Golden Circle Gems: A Memorable Experince with Dofri and Reykjavik Errupts - This was the second of three tours I did with Dofri and Reykjavik Erupts. I also wrote reviews of those tours. The Golden Circle tour with Reykjavik Erupts was fantastic! I thought the first tour we did with Dofri was great, but this one was even better. It was like spending a day with a long-lost cousin who knew all the ins and outs and fun things to do in his home turf. Dofri and his canine helpers, Hneta and Kvika (we asked if they could continue to tour with us), started the day by picking us up at our hotel and soon headed out to the Golden Circle. Our first stop was Thingvellir. On the way there, Dofri began telling us the saga of one of his ancestors, Egill. I won't spoil anything here, but I may now know where a horde of silver is buried in Iceland. I should also add that after hearing the saga from Dofri, I went out and bought a book on Egill's Saga. He is a credit to his skald ancestor and tells it better than reading it in a book, hands down. When we reached Thingvellir, Dofri was quick to help my mom in her wheelchair. She only needs it on long walks, and this was a long walk... downhill. Holding a wheelchair back while walking downhill is a lot harder for me than pushing it uphill. But Dofri stepped in and took care of it, keeping my mom safe and comfortable while we walked. As soon as the ground was flat, he allowed me and mom some private time to enjoy Thingvellir together. Later, he kept my mom occupied by playing fetch with the dogs while I took a hike up to a small but beautiful waterfall that was not accessible to her. We stopped briefly at a secret, off-the-beaten-path place near a lake. There, we saw how traditional Icelandic rye bread was cooked (fascinating). It was a beautiful area, and we were some of the only people there. No big buses of people. Dofri made us reservations at Friðheimar, the famous tomato farm. It was at the top of my mom's list as she used to grow a huge garden. We ate some of the best tomato soup there, and I even tried tomato ice cream (pretty good). We then visited Gullfoss (where again Dofri kept my mom company so I could explore more on foot) and then my favorite stop of the day, Geysir. He snapped the best photo of me and mom (I will share that with my photos). That's another great thing about having Dofri as a guide: his eye for a good photo! We headed for home after that, but not before Dofri took us to one of the best secret ice cream cafes in the area. We learned a lot more on the way back to the hotel about Iceland and its people... including some personal stories from our guide himself. I highly recommend Reykjavik Erupts and Dofri in particular to everyone who wants to book a private tour in Iceland. I booked a private guide because I brought my elderly mom with me on a short trip to Iceland, and I knew private tours would be best considering our limited time and her mobility issues. Dofri made sure our Iceland experience was priceless. Please see my other reviews (Visit the Volcanoes and South Coast) for more information about Reykjavik Erupts. I fully plan to go back to Iceland in the future, and I will be sure to book Reykjavik Erupts again when I do.

Amazing tour and wonderful service - We had an amazing time in Iceland and the highlight was the day tour around the Golden Circle with our guide Dagur. He had so many wonderful stories and great recommendations. We learned a lot about the history of and life in Iceland. It was a last minute trip and we were lucky to have found Reykjavik Erupts. It was super easy to communicate with Dofri and set up all the details. I hope we will have the opportunity to visit again!

Dofri is da man...outstanding tour of the Golden Circle. A must see - We are dyed in the wool travellers. But Dofri took guiding to a new level. Not only was he knowledgeable about Iceland he knows so much about the world. He has been a politician, a marketing Guru and a conservationist. You cannot get a better guide in Iceland or the Baltics... period. His Land Rover is comfortable and he offroads quite a bit which is a must in lovely Iceland. The Golden Circle is a must do. Some unbelievable waterfalls. Never seen terraced falls as in Iceland. Somewhat even beats the Niagara in how beautiful it is. But then there are so may falls each one as pretty as the previous one. Some inside a farm. We even went behind one and Dofri was our photographer.Wow.

Private Tour: Golden Circle, South Coast, 1/2 Day Volcanoes - AMAZING! - Dofri was great in accommodating our schedule and we had a wonderful time touring with Finn. As my wife and I were traveling with our son (8), the private tour was perfect. Finn hit the key spots and supplemented (as time allowed) with spots your cookie-cutter tour companies couldn't accommodate. We learned a lot and had a great time seeing some of this beautiful country. Finn was gracious and personable and always ready to answer our questions. My family and I highly recommend Reykjavik Erupts!

Amazing tour of the Golden Circle - It’s hard to not enjoy such a beautiful country with the natural wonders, but to learn the history along the way makes it that much more wonderful. Finn was an amazing guide! We were able to hit the big points and able to get to see additional hidden Gems along the way. The organic green house lunch was a homerun, we highly recommend. They also had gluten free bread! The vehicle was very comfortable!

A very good private Tour with a very good guide - We did this tour with Dofri. It was excellent. He Shows his guests not only the ordinary spots, also he shows some hidden sights, what we like very much. Also he can explain very well the mentality of Island People. We did this tour with our childreen (5 and 10), and they liked it very much too. So if we will go again to iceland, we will do again a tour with Dorfi for sure.
