- Tianshan Tianchi Lake - At 9:00am, your guide will meet you in the hotel lobby of a centrally located Urumqi hotel, then embark on a one-hour journey to Tianchi. Known as Heavenly Lake in English, Tianchi is nestled in the central Tianshan Mountains and was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage list in 2013. You’ll have the opportunity to enjoy a boat ride on this serene lake, which sits at an elevation of 1980 meters. Discover the enchanting Lesser Tianchi, a secluded lake surrounded by forests and featuring a cascading waterfall with breathtaking views. Additionally, the shores of Tianchi are dotted with traditional Kazakh yurts, offering a glimpse into the nomadic lifestyle of the Kazakhs.
- Red Hill - Enjoy a local lunch before being driven back to Urumqi in the afternoon to explore Red Hill, or Hongshan in Chinese. Located in the heart of the city at an elevation of 910 meters, Red Hill is crowned with a Pagoda that dates back two centuries. Today, Red Hill stands as a symbol of Urumqi.

Overlooking the desert - There‘s no other way than by crossing through some part of the dessert to come to TianShan - and a short while later you‘ll feel like you‘re in Switzerland. The air is clear, the lake beautiful, a quite large waterfall rushes down the mountain, glaciers on the background shine bright white in the sun. You’ll be over 3.000m high, if you choose to walk up the final stretch of the mountain. And from up there you’ll overlook the Heavenly Lake and watch fast stretches of desert in the background. Yes, it‘s China-typically „guided“ (there‘re walkways and stairs showing you the paths you‘re supposed to go), and yes, it is a popular destination for Chinese tourists, but it indeed is a very beautiful area.
