Duration: 1 hour, 30 minutes
Cancellation: 1 day learn more
Highlights
  • Lundey - We stop by one of three puffin islands outside Reykjavík to watch the thousands of puffins that travel to Iceland each summer to breed. As the islands are nature reserves we cannot step foot on land, but rather try to sail as close as possible. Borrow binoculars or bring your own. We recommend a good zoom camera for good quality pictures.

Additional Information

Our puffin observation trip starts from our Ægisgarður pier ticket booth located in Reykjavík’s Old Harbour. Here, tickets can be purchased or prepaid trip vouchers can be exchanged.

The journey is a delightful and simple marine escape accompanied by a guide who joins you on one of our smaller vessels, moored at the Whale Watching Centre’s floating dock. Depending on sea and island conditions, our captains will navigate towards either Akurey or Lundey. Known for their rich avian population, these islands offer the chance to spot not just puffins but also a variety of birds including eider ducks, arctic terns, guillemots, and cormorants.

As a globally recognised champion of environmental conservation, Elding strives to reduce the environmental footprint of its operations while ensuring a memorable sea-faring experience for our guests.

  • As the birds are small in size, we recommend bringing a tripod and a good zoom lens for ‘close up’ photography and/or binoculars (also available to lend on board)
  • The deck on the boat can be slippery. We recommend wearing good sturdy footwear. For optimal viewing and a more enjoyable cruise this tour is weather dependent.
  • Please note that our fleet is not completely accessible for low mobility as there are steep stairs between lower and upper decks and high thresholds to get from the decks into the saloon as well as from the saloon to the toilets.

One of the best Whale Watching Experiences - Fantastic trip. Went early morning and within 10 minutes of leaving the port we saw the first Humpback. Saw a total of four Humpbacks feeding, blowing water and diving. One of the best whale watching experience ever and this was our 6th trip of whale watching around the world. Staff/crew very friendly and knowledgeable. Definitely good value for money. Out for 3 hours. Recommend early morning tour as the whales were very active.

Best Puffin tour - the tour was well worth it. Got to see thousands of Atlantic Puffins, but most importantly for me, some were very close as the boat stopped near the Island. The guide was very good to explain Puffin behavior. I would have paid more to stay a little longer at the Island, but still got some great photos.

Thousands of puffins - Excellent tour to nearby island on small boat, commentary & free emailed photos sent to us afterwards. Saw thousands of puffins, binoculars to borrow if you hadn't got any. Really enjoyed, sun shone, a perfect day!

Great to see the puffins!... - Great to see the puffins! It’s a pity that can’t go closer to them, but giving them space and not to bother them too much is still a nice choice! Enjoyed the trip!

Loved our visit to see the nesting puffins! - Loved seeing the nesting puffins. We enjoyed the boat ride and the visit to see the puffins. I wish that our guide had more information about the nesting puffins. Also, since we were the last to board, our group only had one set of provided binoculars to share. I would recommend bring your own binoculars if you have them.

Crowded, prepare to get wet as there are not much seating under a roof - We went on a rainy day so preparing with your own rain gear is essential. The boat was overcrowded so there was not really place for all of us, some had to stand (or sit) in awkward places. The binoculars were supposedly dealt out in the beginning and no sense was used in doing it, giving four binoculars to a family of four while some parties (that came last) were left without. We did see a lot of birds, puffins amongst others, so the tour did what it should. But I would've appreciated being able to have a seat or a designated place onboard.

Promises failed - The puffins were incredible to watch. So nice you have binoculars onboard. The only things why i wouldn’t reccommend this tour is because the captain collided when we took off and despite the promise to sent photo’s of the puffins, when i send an email, i never got them and i’m really sad about that.
