• El Cedral - The quaint village of El Cedral, located on Cozumel’s southern flank, hosts the island’s most significant spiritual festivity. Initiated over a century and a half ago by Casimiro Cárdenas, this yearly festival traces its origins to a time when Cárdenas, along with others, escaped to the island from Sabán on the mainland following a brutal assault during the Caste War. Many inhabitants were slain in the onslaught, but Cárdenas managed to survive, holding tightly to a diminutive wooden cross.

According to popular belief, Cárdenas made a promise to inaugurate an annual celebration at his new home as a tribute to the divine influence of this cross. Presently, the initial Holy Cross Festival is a component of the larger El Cedral Festival, which encompasses carnivals, customary banquets, rodeos, bullfights, musical performances, and contests. Spanning roughly five days, these festivities take place annually towards April’s end or the onset of May.
