A most memorable tour of Florence and Pisa with with Michela and Gianluca - Thank you Michela and Gianluca! We had been in Rome for a couple of days, but it wasn't until we were on the road to Florence when it hit me of how the rules of the road in Italy are so much different than the rules of the road back home in the US. Gianluca, our driver showed great skill navigating the van through the various challenging roads and conditions, from the very narrow and winding scenic mountain roads overlooking Florence to the heavily congested every-driver-for-themselves city streets. He was also very friendly and considerate. We weren't very strong walkers, but he always seemed to park ( even when there didn't seem to be parking spots available) to put us in the closest proximity of each of the sights we were to see. During the trip to Florence Michela, our tour guide shared her great knowledge of Italy and its rich history. We really enjoyed our conversations with her along the trip and she was able to answer all of our questions on every topic about Italy. As soon as we crossed over the oldest bridge in Florence, the Ponte Vecchio, we felt as if we were swept back into the time of the Renaissance. We learned about many historical landmarks of the city. Inspite of the large line, Michela and her fellow art guide were able to get us into Accademia Gallery without too much of a wait. After viewing Michelangelo's sculpture of David and other works along with the works of other great artists, We walked through the streets of old Florence for an authentic Tuscan cuisine at Trattoria Vecchio Mercato where she recommended the most favorable steak we've ever eaten, Bistecca alla Fiorentina. She told us the meat for Bistecca alla Fiorentina comes from an ancient breed of Tuscan cattle, called the Chianina. This breed of cattle is known for their incredibly flavorful meat (Be sure to get her restaurant recommendations for Rome afterwards). From there we went on to Pisa, to the Pisa's Cathedral Square (Piazza del Duomo), another place that is perfectly preserved in the time of the Renaissance. There Michela had reserved a ticket so that I could climb to the top of the leaning tower. It was a long day, but the experience was well worth it! One suggestion to them would be that they let us know ahead of time of what our schedule was and how much time we have to spend at each stop. I only mention this because we might have taken a little too much at the spot overlooking the city with the breathtaking view, which seemed to make us late for our meeting with the art expert tour guide in Florence. Thank you so much Michela and Gianluca!
