Highlights
  • Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum - We come face to face with the horrific crimes of the Khmer Rouge. Tuol Sleng was a former high school that the Khmer Rouge turned into a centre for interrogation, torture and death. Today it is a museum of torture and serves to remind visitors of the terrible atrocities that came to pass in Cambodia. 17,000 people passed through the gates of this prison and only seven lived to tell the tale.
  • Choeung Ek Genocidal Center - We travel out of town to the Killing Fields of Choeng Ek. Prisoners from Tuol Sleng followed this same route to their fate. An old Chinese cemetery, Choeng Ek was turned into an extermination camp for political prisoners. The remains of 8985 people were exhumed from mass graves and are kept in a memorial stupa here. Despite the horrors of the past, it is a peaceful place to go and a tranquil spot to reflect on the tragic events that engulfed Cambodia and its people.

Additional Information

We confront the grotesque acts committed by the Khmer Rouge. A high school prior to its transformation, Tuol Sleng was converted into an investigation, torment and death hub by the Khmer Rouge. Currently, it serves as a museum of torture, aimed at reminding guests of the grave misdeeds committed in Cambodia. A total of 17,000 souls were confined within the walls of this prison, with only seven survivors to recount the horrors.
We proceed outside the city to the Killing Fields of Choeng Ek. This path was similarly trodden by prisoners from Tuol Sleng towards their tragic end. Initially a Chinese cemetery, Choeng Ek was converted into a death camp for political dissenters. The bodies of 8985 victims were unearthed from mass burial sites and now reside in a commemorative stupa on the premises. Despite its dreadful history, it offers a serene ambiance for reflection on the calamities that swept over Cambodia and its inhabitants.

Must visit in Phnom Penh - Excellent explanation of history by our guide Lina Rachana. The site itself is very heavy with all the past memories, but a must visit if you want to be at Phnom Penh.

Experiencing the brutality of Khmer Rough - Toul Sleng and Killing Field are emotional places created during Khmer Rough. Thank Chansip for telling us a lot about history of Cambodia. We had gone to visit Siem Reap and got much the glory of Angkorian Period but we did not expect Cambodia changed history from the glory to the dark age led by Khmer Rough. We hope this brutality and massacre will not happen to this country again.
