The historical town of Ostia, now located approximately 4 km inland due to the continual progression of the land stimulated by the Tiber river, was fortunate because of the harbors that established a commercial connection with Rome. According to ancient resources, King Anco Marcio founded Ostia on the site of a military camp beside a natural river port. Emperor Claudius had by 44 A.D constructed an artificial port, which was later neglected when Trajan initiated the construction of another port to the north.
