Beautiful reserve, informative guide - Visited in late March 2024 with a small group. Our guide Lus was friendly and very knowledgable about the local area, history and traditions. He identified the birds and plants we saw on our leisurely 2.5 hour walk around the reserve through pine woodland and out onto the coastal salt marshes and sand dunes. A very enjoyable and interesting trip for anyone interested in wildlife and the environment. Would highly recommend.

Fantastic local guide - We feel like we escaped to paradise with Luis from PerNatur on his Ria Formosa Nature Park walk. He picked us up at our accommodation in Olhao in a comfortable and clean van. He has a vast knowledge of birds that he shared with us. Providing us with binoculars and a telescope so we could examine the birds up closely. This was an unforgettable travel experience with a local guide that loves to show and tell you about this fantastic area of the Algarve. Thank you so much Luís.

Great Wildlife Experience - This was exactly what we were looking for - a personal guided tour of Portugal wildlife and ecosystems. The guide was knowledgeable and very experienced. He met us at the appointed place and drove us in to Ria Formosa Park. We saw at least 25 species of birds. He had binoculars for us and a spotting scope. He knew where to look and what we were seeing. This was the best experience during our week in Portugal.

Fantastic Bird Watching experience! - We had an amazing afternoon with Luis. We have seen birds we never saw before or would not find by ourselves. He is not only knowledgeable about birds but it goes much further. We enjoyed his enthusiasm and would definitely recommend him!

Best way to see Ria Formosa with expert local birder - We had a wonderful morning in the Ria Formosa with Luis, who picked us up from our accommodation in a spacious vehicle & guided us through the reserve. He is a true Faro/Olhão local with expert knowledge of the birds, flora & other fauna of the area! He was excellent at explaining the defining features of birds we saw, showing us their pictures in the guide & explaining migratory patterns. He was really happy to answer questions, explain more about the area, and swap knowledge with us. It’s perfect whether you are an experienced birder or a non-birder wanting to enjoy this wonderful place and its inhabitants. It was a lovely relaxed occasion, there was no clock watching and we birds we saw included a booted eagle, Sardinian warblers, spoonbills, black winged stilts, a hoopoe, crested lark, purple swamphen, whimbrel, a marsh harrier, black winged kite, lots of storks & flamingoes and probably thousands of small waders & plovers. Would highly recommend if you want to really see the rich diversity of birds in the Ria Formosa, avoid the 2 hour boat ride option & do the Per Natur tour instead!
