Nestled near the northern shore of Iceland, Litlaá or ‘Little River’ is a remarkable site with a 12-17°C river, maintained by continuous geothermal activities.
The river’s extraordinary features include its shallow depth, comparable to a lagoon, and a mild current that lends itself perfectly for snorkeling.
Adding to the spectacle, the riverbed is adorned with shifting volcanic sands and vibrant sediments that spring forth from beneath, creating stunning patterns in the riverbed, while they gracefully dance under the luxuriating drift of the warm waters above. This phenomenon is often referred to as ‘Bubbling sands’.
Amidst the bubbling sands, beautiful swaths of green algae can be spotted, which adds to the breathtaking sight.
The lagoon, known to house a substantial snail population, has thus earned the nickname ‘Snail Lagoon’. It is also revered as one of the finest trout rivers in Iceland.
Situated on the Diamond Circle, Litlaá makes for an ideal self-drive tour destination.
