Highlights
  • Tam Coc - Arrival at Tam Coc should be around 7:30, and we’ll start with a boat trip through the valley and caves. We have time for short walks up to various vantage points, which is where we’ll be shooting some fantastic landscapes. We’ll also be able to shoot portraits of the rower-women of Tam Coc, with their permission, of course.
  • Bich Dong Pagoda - Then we explore historic Bich Dong Pagoda, a World Heritage-listed site, and a great spot for atmospheric photos of crumbling architecture against a backdrop of mountains and rivers.
  • Mua Caves - We now head to Hang Mua, and it’s a steep climb up 500 steps to shoot one of Vietnam’s most iconic landscapes. It’s worth the sweat, and we’ll take our time, with plenty of breaks along the way. Our focus here is on capturing these iconic landscapes.
  • Ninh Binh - After lunch and coffee, we travel north to visit two fascinating craft villages. First stop is Ninh Van stone carving village, where we’ll capture images of locals carving incredible statues and headstones by hand. The stone is sourced from Ninh Binh’s many limestone karst mountains, and the villagers have carried on this craft for nearly a century. Then, it’s time to document the action at Gia Thuy ceramic village. We’ll photograph the traditional manufacture of pots using local clay, providing us with rich, atmospheric imagery.
  • Van Long Nature Reserve - Finally, we head for Van Long nature reserve. There are many villages in the area nearby, offering plenty of opportunities for pictures of rural life as the sun goes down. Farmers will be bringing in their cattle, buffaloes taking a dip in the rivers and schoolchildren cycling home along the dykes. There are good sunset shots possible over the reserve from near the Van Long boat jetty, depending on the weather and time of year.

Amazing experience - The tour is very well organized and designed to get the best shots possible. We arrived very early in Ninh Binh and were among the first on the boat at Tam Coc. Incredible and evocative scenery. Then we climbed the 500 steps up to Hang Mua viewpoint and it was amazing. Finally we visited the pottery village that was very interesting and we had the opportunity to shoot documentary pictures. My guide, Tung, was very kind, patient and helpful. He helped me testing new photographic composition techniques. I recommend this tour.

So glad I got to do this - Duc and Linh were terrific. I saw fascinating places, rode on two boats, and learned more about composition. Given the number of people, we were given two options: climb the mountain where many people would be or go to the Nature Reserve which is not as well known. We chose the Nature Reserve and it was beautiful and interesting. Vietnam in Focus always makes sure you are taken care of. If I get to go back to Vietnam I will absolutely book more tours with them.

Wonderfull and funny - We went with 3 generations for this trip, some photographers, some not. It was wonderfull, we had 2 guides, Duc and Toan, boat young, full of energy and humanity ! They were perfect, we loved it. Duc was great for exploration to all generations, from my mum to my son. A perfect photography tour, he stopped the car whenever it was interesting, was nice and human with the locals to make them confortable... All what we want from a photography tour. We recommend them two with a lot of enthusiasm and we are grateful they made our trip to Ninh Binh so nice.

Fun and informative - Duc was an amazing and patient tutor. I am an enthusiastic amateur and he was happy to teach, answer all my questions and show me techniques to enable me to improve my photography. He was also knowledgeable about the area we visited and was happy to vary things according to my wishes. The day was very well organised, with a good combination of places to see & photograph. In addition, Duc has signposted me to useful on-line info & tutorials to help me further and also took some photos of me while i was concentrating on composing shots which was nice. I will look out for similar photo tours on my next holiday but Duc has set the bar very high for others to follow!
