Highlights
  • Etna Cable Car - It starts from the Etna Sud Alpine Guides’ hut, continues by cable car up to 2500 meters and then with a jeep to 2750 meters.
  • Valle Del Bove - The first stop will be the viewpoint of the Valle del Bove, a large horseshoe-shaped volcano-tectonic depression located in the eastern sector of Etna, it is very important from a volcanological point of view as several outcrop along the walls. On fine days the view is breathtaking.
  • Crateri barbagallo - A very important stop is the Barbagallo crater at an altitude of about 3000 meters. Going up along the sandbanks, you will reach a lava flow channel dating back to the 2002 eruption. Going up the channel, you will arrive at the effusive mouth of the same eruption. we will continue towards Torre del Filosofo (2920 meters) along the recent still hot lava flows (21-05-2023). After the lunch break we will walk along the edge of the Barbagallo crater admiring the summit craters and the entire eastern coast of Sicily, from Taormina to Syracuse.
  • Mount Etna - After the walk on the edge of the Barbagallo crater, before starting the descent, we would have the opportunity once again to admire the summit craters of Etna, Central Crater and South-East Crater, with their inevitable plume of gas.
  • Etna Cable Car Bar 2500m - The return by cable car will take place along channels of volcanic sand, admiring, on fine days, a breathtaking view, which ranges from the Ionian coast to the interior of Sicily.

Additional Information

An experience you won’t forget: we’ll start with a cable car ride to 2,500m, followed by a Jeep ride to 2,750m. Here, we initiate our hike, taking in the striking displays of extinct crater cones, emission vents, and cracks in the lava. Our journey continues to the Barbagallo craters at a height of 3000 meters. This vantage point allows for a breathtaking view of the grand Summit Craters and the opportunity to appreciate both new (21-05-2023) and old lava streams, before we explore a lava flow channel. Our tour also includes a stop at an effusive vent from the 2002 eruption, before we descend the sands to the Montagnola for an awe-inspiring outlook of the Valle del Bove, a broad, horseshoe-shaped volcanic depression. The panorama is so immense, it gives visitors a sense of mysterious might held by few other places globally. Concluding with a cable car ride, you’ll have one last glimpse of the mesmerising moon-like landscape, making for a 4-hour walk in total.

Super you absolutely have to go there - Absolutely worth it, praise goes to the organization but above all to Giuseppe who led the group, explaining the route and the history of the volcano point by point in various languages. I advise you not to rely on improvised guides, it's not worth it, congratulations again to the group Alpine guides Etna south

Breathtaking Views! - Amazing experience! But this is definitely for people in decent shape, who are not afraid of heights! 5-6 hours of hiking. Had I known how scary some of it was (no ropes, rails- like many mountain hikes) I may not have done it. But again I'm so glad that I did! Poles helped! Our guide was incredible. Extremely knowledgeable and very informative!

Trekking on the summit craters - A wonderful experience with expert and professional guides who allowed us to do the trekking despite the not particularly easy climatic conditions!

How do you explain all this? 🌋 - The summary of this excursion came suddenly when I said: and how do you explain all this in words? A show that is continuous emotion! A nature that continually changes, giving different colors, images that fuel the imagination, fun descents, eyes that get lost in the mountain smoke, up to the sea in the distance... The very organized mountain guides, with shoes and jackets supplied and Clara, our personal guide with kindness, knowledge and passion who only deals with those who, fortunately, have never forgotten nature. Thanks CLARA! Francesca, Claudio and Maria

Unforgettable excursion to Etna. 100% recommendable - It has been a great experience, they gave us boots, socks, canes and a jacket. They explained the visit to you in French, English or Italian. Our guide, Antonio, spoke English and explained everything great and very interactive. Here on Tripadvisor we paid 50 euros and then 45 there for the 4x4 and the funicular. First you take the funicular until 2500 and then the 4x4 until 2850 approx and there you start walking until 2950 approx. The ascent is done slowly so that the entire group adapts to walking at that height. It is only a short time that you are ascending. Antonio is always making sure that everyone is well. There were from quite young children to people in their 70s. Then we eat there in front of the craters. Then it is all flat and downhill and making stops to explain the different lavas and eruptions. And in between we enter a cave formed by lava. Then we descend until we take the funicular. The excursion is very worth it and Antonio is a cracker.

Beautiful discovery of Etna - We really recommend this very enriching experience, with a very friendly and interesting guide (it's much better than doing it alone). At the beginning of May, it was zero degrees with wind and sun (felt like minus 10), so remember to bring warm clothes and a windproof jacket, hat, gloves, scarf, and walking shoes. It's a bit sporty, so be in good physical condition. And plan a small picnic for the break. We learned a lot today about the behavior of volcanoes. A big thank you to the guides!

Great experience, but don't book until you know the forecast. - Everything was going fantastic until a storm started, with fog, rain, cold and a lot of hail. The excursion had to be interrupted. It strikes me that it could not have been foreseen.

Beautiful experience on top of Etna - Beautiful experience on Etna, everything available. It's nice that there are walking shoes available, so you don't have to carry them with you. You see unique things and get a lot of explanation (although a bit repetitive). Be careful of the wind, it can be icy cold. You can buy tickets for the cable car and 4x4 buses from the organizer in the hut. You then immediately skip the line at the cash register. Take into account more than 2.5 hours of walking and quite a bit of climbing and descending.
