Highlights
  • Pavlogiannis Hotel Tourist Enterp. of Methoni S.A. - Our trip starts at the beach right in front of Methoni, next to which looms the impressive fortress. We glide our kayaks near the imposing walls of the castle which are adorned with impressive arcs and bastions. We travel back in time with pictures taken from the medieval past of the region. Soon we will be crossing the channel between Methoni and Sapienza where many ancient shipwrecks are scattered around. We shall take a chance here to snorkel near the island’s rough coast in search of a few visible remains of shipwrecks. Heading south we shall reach the tranquility of the beautiful beach of the island. Here, we rest, swim and sunbath and taste our delicious homemade picnic of local delicacies. The island is a monument of nature covered by a dense, ancient arbutus forest, home of muffle (wild sheep), wild goats (kri-kri), partridges, pheasants, and many other species of which we may be lucky enough to meet them. Once our break is over, we head east paddle exploring the north coast of the island before returning back to the starting point to end a paddling adventure in Methoni and the island of Sapienza.

Additional Information

Methoni served as the ‘eye’ of Venice in the Mediterranean, functioning as a vital marine and trade hub for the Venetians throughout the middle ages. The Methoni fortress remains as one of the most remarkable castles in Peloponnese, constructed on a rocky outcrop that extends into the sea and is isolated from the mainland by a man-made trench. The verdant isle of Sapienza lies across Methoni; this isle, part of the Natura 2000 network, boasts a myriad of unique flaura and fauna species. A number of shipwrecks rest near its shores, visible to those in possession of goggles and snorkels and awaiting exploration.

Sea kayaking in Methoni - A brilliant day of exploration! If you're looking for a spot of adventure on your holiday, look no further. We spent a half-day sea kayaking in crystal blue waters from Methoni to Sapienza and back. All of the equipment was in a perfect condition and the 3 guides, George, George and Chris were fantastic. As well as all the helpful kayaking tips, they included a history of the area, details of the local wildlife and served an amazing lunch whilst still giving us time to do some exploring on our own. Would highly recommend.

Amazing sea kayaking in Methoni - This was an amazing experience. We have done kayaking before in the canals in London but nothing compares to this amazing experience going from Methoni to Sapienza island in Messinia, Greece. We puddled in clear waters that were an exquisite deep blue colour changing to light green or blue. We explored caves and then stopped for a picnic at the beach in Sapienza and I don't think I have been in a more beautiful beach in my life! On the way back to Methoni and winds picked up a tiny bit so we experienced some light waves. George (Giwrgos) our guide was very experienced, very pleasant to talk to, and very knowledgable about the local history - he made the whole thing very special! I would recommend the Methoni sea kayaking to anyone!

Gorgeous nature with the company of lovely people - We enjoyed kayaking from Methoni castle towards the island of Sapienza. Trifonas knows how to create a good spirit to the team. I recommend the trip to everybody, even for people who are not very much into sports..you will have an experience in the nature with lovely people. Fore the ones who love sports, there will be given opportunities during the trip eg for diving and swimming. I would love to take part in more activities of explore Messinia in the future!
