Additional Information

Meknes, also known as the Imperial City, was formerly a prominent city and the capital in the monarchy. It was originally built as a Berber fortress from where the Khajarites overpowered their Arab leaders in the 8th century, eventually becoming the primary commerce hub for regional Berbers. Even though the city was severely damaged by the Almoravids, it was gradually rebuilt under the leadership of Mly Ismail, the brother of an Alaouite sultan. After his brother’s death, he assumed control of the country and constructed an expansive city suitable for a sultan, in Meknes.

Volubilis is an impressive Roman establishment, signifying the utmost extent of Roman authority and influence during Trajan’s rule - it served as their western frontier. Despite the assertion of archaeologists that the site was home to Neolithic and Phoenician inhabitants, under Juba II, a Roman protectorate monarch, the town increasingly embraced Roman influence and was officially annexed by Claudius. With Emperors Trajan and later Septimus Severus in power, the city thrived, and numerous magnificent structures were erected.
